Energy and Water Bill Goes to Conference
Funding for renewable energy, advanced vehicle manufacturing.
On July 30, The Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill (S. 1436) passed on the Senate floor following the House version that was approved earlier last month, sending the two versions to conference. The hydrogen and fuel cell technologies provisions of this bill fund the Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy program (EERE) Hydrogen program at the Department of Energy at $190 million.

Obama Administration Announces up to $32 Million Initiative to Expand Hydropower.
Washington, DC - U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced up to $32 million in Recovery Act funding to modernize the existing hydropower infrastructure in the U.S., increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Today's announcement is designed to support the deployment of turbines and control technologies to increase power generation and environmental stewardship at existing non-Federal hydroelectric facilities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the Department of Energy’s intent to award Massachusetts $25 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to accelerate development of the state’s Wind Technology Testing Center and create hundreds of new jobs in the area.
The new center will test commercial-sized wind turbine blades to help reduce cost, improve technical advancements and speed deployment of the next generation of wind turbine blades into the marketplace. State Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles joined Secretary Chu and Governor Patrick for the announcement at the Autoport in Charlestown, the eventual site of testing center.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As part of the ongoing effort to increase the use of domestic renewable fuels, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu today announced plans to provide $786.5 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to accelerate advanced biofuels research and development and to provide additional funding for commercial-scale biorefinery demonstration projects.
The DOE biomass program will leverage DOE’s national laboratories, universities, and the private sector to help improve biofuels reliability and overcome key technical challenges, with the goal of creating third-generation biofuels like green gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) covers three technical areas: biomass feedstocks development; cellulosic biofuels and biobased products; and biofuels development analysis, including strategic guidance, analyses of the energy and environmental impact of biofuels production, and an assessment of the potential for biomass feedstock production on federal lands.
