The U.S. Department of Commerce hosts Manufacturing Day in order to increase public awareness about what and where manufacturing is, to provide some people with a pathway toward a new career, and to demonstrate manufacturing’s value to the U.S. economy. Manufacturing day is a BIG DEAL. Manufacturing supports over 17 million jobs in the U.S. Every dollar spent in manufacturing adds $1.37 to the U.S. economy, and every 100 jobs in a manufacturing facility creates an additional 250 jobs in other sectors- Manufacturing Matters.
Manufacturing has come a long way thanks to technology. The work environment is cleaner, the pay is higher and the skill sets needed are more complex than ever before. Manufacturing Day is helping to get the word out. Over the next decade, nearly three and a half million manufacturing jobs will likely need to be filled and 2 million of those jobs could go unfilled due to the predicted skills gap.
The Administration has taken a leadership role in creating a National Network of Manufacturing Institutes. We applaud them for announcing the competition for the new, much needed Smart Manufacturing Institute.
