12.19.07 TechVision21 Lauds Passage of Comprehensive Energy Bill: Chairman Dingell sees a "glimmer of hope" as President Signs Bill into Law
"Today we make a major step with the Energy Independence and Security Act. We make a major step toward reducing our dependence on oil, confronting global climate change, expanding the production of renewable fuels and giving future generations of our country a nation that is stronger, cleaner and more secure" said President Bush during a signing ceremony at the U.S. Department of Energy.
The bill seeks to support energy independence and clean up the environment by:
- Requiring fuel producers to use at least 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022, to diversify energy supplies and reduce dependence on oil
- Increasing fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020
- Improving energy efficiency in lighting and appliances and directing federal agencies to lead by example
"We applaud the passage of this legislation and support these positive first steps such as authorization for renewable electricity production and energy storage research," said TechVision21 CEO, Kelly Carnes. "Now we urge Congress and the Administration to take the next step and follow-up with appropriations to match the authorization levels."
Rep. John Dingell, Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce called the legislation a "solid accomplishment" but said, "This legislation is not the final word in energy security or climate change. Those are matters we will be addressing next year as we craft comprehensive climate change legislation."
