On July 29, 2006, Kelly Carnes made a keynote address at World Future 2006: Creating Global Strategies for Humanity's Future.
Her presentation—Clean Energy: Fueling the Future?—offered an assessment of global energy risks and the prospects for increased use of clean energy such as hydrogen, solar, wind power, and biomass. The annual conference of the World Future Society, held in Toronto July 28-30, brings an international group of forward-thinkers, trend-trackers, and visionaries together for intense discussion about the world's future. The World Future Society is the largest and oldest organization in the world devoted to studying the future. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, the Society publishes the bimonthly FUTURIST magazine. Click here to review Kelly Carnes' presentation to see if clean energy is in your future.

TechVision 21 Lauds the Protecting America's Competitive Edge Act, Urges Focus on Hydrogen and Innovation as Key to America's Future

TechVision21, a technology and workforce strategy company, applauds the introduction of Protecting America's Competitive Edge Act (PACE) by Senators Lamar Alexander, Jeff Bingaman, Pete Domenici, and Barbara Mikulski. The PACE Act represents an important step toward strengthening U.S. competitiveness, technological leadership, and the science and engineering workforce. It calls for the establishment of an Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Department of Energy to support groundbreaking energy research, and authorizes substantial increases in research and development funding at the Energy Department.

"The PACE Act recognizes that America must innovate to strengthen our energy security, reduce our dependency on foreign oil, and contribute to a cleaner environment," said Kelly Carnes, President and CEO of TechVision21. "America's economic and national security demands that our county no longer remain tethered to foreign oil. Investing in hydrogen, along with other renewable energy sources, is an important first step toward energy self-sufficiency and environmental leadership."

This past summer President Bush signed The National Energy Policy Act, authorizing a strong program of research, development and demonstration on hydrogen fuels and fuel cells. TechVision21 urges Congress and the Administration to use the authorizations in the PACE Act and the National Energy Policy Act to make meaningful investments to advance this hydrogen and fuel cell technology agenda, and speed America's move toward a hydrogen economy.

In the September 18, 2005 issue of the Washington Post, TechVision21 CEO Kelly Carnes offered her views on strategies to lessen dependence on non-renewable sources of energy, and the outlook for jobs in the alternative energy sector.

...And developing [alternative energy] technologies will encompass both government and private industry. "There's a really important role for the government to play," says Kelly Carnes, president and CEO of TechVIsion21, a technology policy consulting firm. "If we are going to move to renewable fuels, the government has to incentivize the private sector, largely by making a lot of investments and partnerships with corporate America."

Right now, Carnes notes that the emerging fuel-cell sector—which is just beginning to see its products being commercialized–employs about 8,000 individuals... It is a small number, acknowledges Carnes, but one that is expected to grow, largely because of President George W. Bush's recently signed energy bill, which authorizes several billion dollars in support of this industry and provides $14.5 billion worth of tax breaks.

...Of course, it would be a mistake to think that hydrogen is the only source of sustainable power, and indeed, most people are leery of putting all their eggs into the hydrogen basket. "We have to invest in hydrogen, but we should also have a balanced portfolio that includes wind, solar, hydroelectric and clean coal technologies," said Carnes.

On July 31, 2005, Kelly Carnes made the keynote presentation at World Future 2005: Foresight, Innovation and Strategy. Her presentation, America's Hydrogen Future: Myth or Reality? offered an audience of more than 1,000 a balanced and thought-provoking view of the opportunities and challenges presented by transition to a hydrogen-powered economy. The annual conference of the World Future Society, held in Chicago July 29-31, is an international gathering of forward-thinkers, trend-trackers, and visionaries coming together for intense discussion about the world's future. The World Future Society is the largest and oldest organization in the world devoted to studying the future. TechVision21 Client Wins $1.8 million Economic Development Grant.

On January 28, 2004 at the Kettering University campus in Flint, Michigan, the U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded a $1.8 million Federal grant to assist the university's new construction of the Center for Fuel Cell Systems and Powertrain Integration. U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development David A. Sampson and the Economic Development Administration (EDA) Regional Director C. Robert Sawyer attended the event to present the award. The Center for Fuel Cell Systems and Powertrain integration will be housed in the university's new C.S. Mott Engineering and Science building.

The Center will include four state-of-the-art fuel cell test stands and labs, office and research space for eight new businesses in its incubator, and will be run by a 200kw stationary fuel cell. These additions will allow the center to meet its goal of accelerating development and commercialization of fuel cells for stationary and mobile applications by providing a top-ranked fuel cell engineering education and technology leadership in R&D, testing and evaluation.

TechVision21 has been a key advisor to Kettering on the project.
