Get Ready for Alternative Energy
Economic, environmental, and social forces are bringing new urgency to the quest for alternative energy solutions. Global economic growth and population increases promise to drive a nearly 50 percent increase in the demand for energy worldwide over the next 15 years. Continued instability in the Middle East threatens the world's petroleum supplies. Consumers are more worried than ever before about soaring fuel prices, energy security, clean air, clean water, and global warming.
Washington is now getting serious about alternative energy. Through the Energy Policy Act of 2005, President Bush's Advanced Energy and Hydrogen Initiatives, and other programs, billions of dollars are being invested to advance the development, commercialization, and deployment of alternative energy. These funds are aimed at growing a U.S. alternative energy industry.
"Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology."
President George W. Bush
State of the Union Address 2006
The landmark Energy Policy Act calls for Federal spending of more than $4 billion over the next five years to jump-start the U.S. hydrogen economy. The Act also authorizes nearly $3 billion to advance biomass, bio-fuels, wind energy, solar energy, and advanced alternative energy-powered vehicles.
A wide range of grants and other financial assistance is available for private companies, agricultural producers, small businesses, non-profit organizations, universities, partnerships, and state and local governments. Individual grants range from a few thousand dollars to as much as $80 million (over a four year grant life). Other support is available in the form of loan guarantees, tax credits, directed procurements, and earmarks.
Financial support is available for a diverse set of activities related to developing, commercializing, and deploying alternative energy:
- Research and technology development
- Technology and systems evaluation
- Technology transfer
- Demonstration programs
- Business start-up, development, operation, and expansion
- Purchase and installation of renewable energy systems and production plants
- Market development and directed procurements
- Workforce training
